How bad does bleach damage your hairr?

Well I know someone who did that in their early twentys, and it ruined her hair completely. Now its completely dried out. But it depends on how long you have it in, and highlights usually don't really ruin hair. And if your under twenty, your hair should be healthy enough to take it.
