Why don't atheists fear God/hell?

Or do they but they just don't admit it? I remember as a kid, I started to have gay feelings for my 10 year old Bi-racial classmate who ironically had big green eyes and caramel colored skin. I started to doubt God, asking "why he would give me these feelings." Then Ultimately I became an atheist for 2 years. However, deep down I always feared God and hell and knew he existed. So, why don't atheist fear God? Or are they faking like I was?
